What are the types of Computer systems?

The computers are categorized or classified according to their size and capability in processing data and performing instructions. The following are the most common types of computers:-

Personal computers

Personal computers are the computers which are single-user computers and popularly known as less powerful than all types of computers. They have a small and weak microprocessor, a keyboard for entering data and commands in the system, the monitor for showing the system’s contents and usually with the mouse typically used for interacting with items (Icons, Buttons, links etc.) on the computer screen.

As its name implies ‘Personal Computers (PCs) can be purchased and owned by any person or small businesses and companies for different normal and minor tasks.

These computers are designed to support only one user at a time. Within this kind of computer, we can also see that (PCs) come in different categories. These PC types include the Desktop, Laptop (Notebook), Netbook, Handheld PCs (PDAs) and others more.

Workstations

These are the computers that look as similar as PCs but differ in case that they have a high quality monitor, powerful Microprocessor, thus their processing also is slightly different from that of PCs. They can connect on the network for data sharing among themselves.

Minicomputers

Minicomputers are computers that support multiple users starting from ten onwards simultaneously. They are built to perform complex computation, such as in transaction processing applications.

Mainframe computers

These are the computers that are shared by multi-users, connected to the other computers via terminals. They are built for intensive computational activities. They are larger than minicomputers, workstations and PCs. Mainframes can supports about hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously.

Supercomputers

Supercomputers are largest and most powerful computers characterized with high speed in data processing. Supercomputers are used for designing drugs, chemical compound, aircrafts, automobiles and etc.
